Hell Is Just Around The Corner by Bob Miller

We’re told almost every day that it’s the little things that count.  The world around us is warming and the environment is becoming increasingly unstable, yet it seems very little is being done on a worldwide level to tackle the problem.  You can see the authorities are making some progress – with advertising and public information videos encouraging us all to switch off the TV, to wash at a cooler temperature, and all sorts of reminders that we all need to make some changes.

But hang on a moment – how is turning off a TV going to save the planet?  Turning out the lights can surely only go so far.  How much difference can we actually make on an individual level to the future of the planet for the next generation?

Actually, the sad fact is we can’t do very much.  Like voting, an individual can make very little difference to the overall result, even though we’d like to think we hold the key.   To make a real difference, we need to get those that can make widespread changes like businesses and our governments.

Businesses pollute in the name of economic progress and we do nothing to stop it.  Governments run inflated departments of civil servants driving state-funded vehicles to their fat-cat lunch dates without a thought for the world we’re leaving behind.  It’s our children that will be left when all’s said and done, and I for one couldn’t live with that on my conscience.

The truth about global warming and pollution is that our governments and businesses contribute far more than on an individual level.  We praise the enterprise of those that establish power plants, and we depend upon them for the prosperity of our economy.  On the other hand, we criticize motorists and tax fuel consumption in the name of the environment.

A serious approach to resolving the issue of global warming can only be directed at stopping the mass polluters and creating new and innovative ways of generating power and running our lives.   Instead of picking on the average consumer, the first on the firing line should be big business.  Stopping pollution at the source by switching to cleaner power plants, for example, can undo more damage than each of us could hope to achieve in a lifetime.   The plain and simple truth is that it’s our businesses that are doing the damage, and until we recognize and remedy that situation, we can never realistically hope to achieve environmental stability and reverse the damage we’re doing to our planet.

While we can collectively make a huge difference by overhauling the way we live our lives, on an individual level thinking we can make a difference is, at best, irrational. Real environmental change can only come about when we recognize on a global level that it is our businesses and governments that need to change before the onus can shift to our private lives.
